A Squire was the second step in the apprenticeship of a knight. Pages became Squires at the age of 14, only to increase their responsibilities and chores. As squires boys would learn to fight and even go into battle to serve as a small army for their knight. At home in the manor Squires would serve the knight his meal, entertain him with chess and play music or sing.
They learned to be quite good at archery, tilting and sword fighting, so as when they became knights there training would become useful. To graduate, they either had to perform a valorous deed or if their master wanted to dub them. The thing that usually kept squires just that, preventing them from becoming young knights was the matter of money. In that day and age, Armor, weapons, services, food and employees all had high fees, so it was difficult to become a knight unless you were royalty. The idea of becoming a knight without armor was useless, warriors were very efficient, so unless you were armored and shielded, you wouldn’t last more than one battle.
